Many consider their animals as part of their family. Consequently, ensuring their pets are well-cared for after their passing is a significant concern to them.

Thankfully, if you are someone who loves your pets unconditionally, you can include provisions in your will to provide the care they deserve.

Establishing a pet trust

New York law allows for the creation of a pet trust. A trust is a legal arrangement that provides funds specifically for the care of your pet. In your will, you can establish a pet trust and designate a trustee to manage the funds.

Direct provisions in your will

Alternatively, you can include direct provisions when creating your will. These provisions should specify who will own your pet and provide guidelines for their care.

Daily care

Detail your pet’s daily care requirements, including feeding schedules, types of food, exercise routines, and any special needs. If your pet has medical conditions, provide specific instructions.

Veterinary care

Set aside funds for regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and emergency medical care. Specify your preferred veterinary clinic and any particular treatments.

Living arrangements

Consider your pet’s living arrangements. If your pet needs a certain type of environment, include these details in the trust. For instance, if your dog needs a yard to play in, make these preferences clear to the caregiver.

Including pet care provisions in your will ensures your pet receives the attention and support it needs after your passing. By clearly outlining these arrangements, you can have peace of mind knowing you are thoughtfully and comprehensively providing for your pet.
